Meeting the neighbors

So in a town like this, any sort of activity is cause for people to come and check you out. Rumors also fly mosquitoes in June. Thus, I have met a few of the neighbors. I met Jim and Lorraine early on as they are the people that sold us the lot. They are really nice people and quite supportive of this whole exercise.

I met another fellow from across the way who seems nice enough but when I told him the house is going to be two stories, he actually flinched and sort of clammed up. Everyone on that street was notified and had a chance to object so there's no stopping it now!

Behind us there are a couple of acreages. I haven't met the one family but they have a reputation for being... somewhat difficult to deal with. I'm sure we'll be good neighbors.

I spoke with Judy, the owner of the other acreage, before we started digging. She has run her cable from a telephone pole, across our lot and to her house about 400m back! She said that it's only temporary until the developer in the area finishes off the services nearer to her house. Jim and I had a good laugh about that since it's been that way for about five years from what I've been told. I told her that her TV might go blank one day because we can only be so careful when digging up the place with a backhoe and pushing dirt around with a bobcat.

Our only close neighbors will be Jim and Lorraine and they seem like a hoot so far.

Framing Begins

Andrew and I started framing today! It was soooo nice to actually see some materials standing. We had to wait a week longer than expected because of a mix up with our floor joists. I had two quotes on floor joists - we (me and the people at the store) thought they were both for engineered wood I-beams, which take about three days to get. Nope - they actually quoted on web trusses, which are more expensive and have about a three week lead time. We talked them down to two weeks and I think we'll make that time up when we start doing electrical, plumbing and HVAC. You can just feed all of your tubing, wires, etc. right through the webs without drilling holes. Way, way easier. Weather and Decks and Roofing

The spring weather is always mixed here in the Pass. We had 12˚C one day and blizzards the next. We managed to get the front completely finished and even threw on the deck. Here you can see one of those places where mistakes have been made. Not buy us though - it was the truss company. One thing I learned through all of this is to not assume the engineer (?) at the truss company understands your drawings. There have been a few errors on their part now and we've just had to adapt as we go. Well... in all fairness, we probably could have corrected this if we caught it earlier. The pilings for the center post were in the right place and so is the foundation - no problem. When I went to put up the post, it was not centered under the gable. WTH? I checked my measurements, looked at the drawings and the everything seemed to check out. Then I measured the gable again. It turns out that if you take a close look at the drawings, the gables isn't centered over the doorway. It is centered...

Second Floor Well Underway

It's amazing how fast we're moving along considering the wind and the weather. We have about 75% of the second floor framing done and now we're heading into a holding pattern because of materials. The guy that is cutting the big timbers had a problem with his forklift and so he hasn't worked for over a week now. In reality, we only need two of them to support the cantilevered corner of the spare room out front. You can see my fantastic, improvised support post right there in front. Maybe just don't walk on that part of the floor upstairs quite yet. This is a close-up of the west wall and one of my favorite details. It's just a cantilevered window and seat in the middle of the stairwell but it looks really great. There you will have a view of Turtle Mountain as you come up the stairs.
